What is an Upper Endoscopy?

An upper endoscopy, also called an EGD (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy), allows your gastroenterologist to directly examine the lining of your esophagus, stomach, and the first portion of your small intestine (duodenum). A thin, flexible tube with a camera is gently passed through your mouth. The procedure is quick, performed under sedation, and is one of the most common and safe procedures in gastroenterology.

Why It's Performed

Your doctor may recommend an upper endoscopy to evaluate or treat the following conditions:

GERD / Acid Reflux Stomach Ulcers H. pylori Infection Barrett's Esophagus Difficulty Swallowing Unexplained Anemia Celiac Disease Upper GI Bleeding Nausea / Vomiting Stomach Cancer Screening
What to Expect

Before the Procedure

  • You will be asked not to eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours before your procedure.
  • An IV will be placed in your arm to administer sedation medication.

During the Procedure

  • You will lie on your left side on a comfortable procedure table.
  • After sedation takes effect, a thin flexible scope is gently guided through your mouth, down your esophagus, into your stomach and duodenum.
  • The camera transmits live images to a monitor so your doctor can inspect the tissue in detail.
  • If needed, biopsies (small tissue samples) can be taken, polyps removed, or bleeding treated — all during the same procedure.
  • The procedure typically takes 15 to 30 minutes.

After the Procedure

  • You will rest in a recovery area for 30–60 minutes while the sedation wears off.
  • A mild sore throat or bloating is normal and resolves within 24–48 hours.
  • Your doctor will discuss findings with you before you leave.
  • You must have a driver (age 18+) to take you home — driving after sedation is not permitted.
  • Plan to rest for the remainder of the day. Most patients return to normal activities the next day.

Quick Facts

Duration15 – 30 minutes
SedationIV sedation (you will be comfortable and drowsy)
Driver RequiredYes — must be present at check-in
Time at FacilityApproximately 2 hours total
Return to WorkMost patients return the next day

What is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a procedure that allows your gastroenterologist to examine the entire lining of your large intestine (colon) and rectum using a long, flexible scope with a camera. It is the most effective screening tool for colorectal cancer — the third most common cancer in the United States — and can detect polyps before they become cancerous. When polyps are found, they are often removed during the same procedure.

Why It's Performed
Colorectal Cancer Screening Polyp Detection & Removal Rectal Bleeding Change in Bowel Habits Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Chronic Diarrhea Unexplained Abdominal Pain Iron Deficiency Anemia Diverticular Disease Follow-up After Prior Polyps
What to Expect

During the Procedure

  • You will lie on your left side on a comfortable procedure table after sedation is administered through an IV.
  • The colonoscope is gently guided through the rectum and advanced through the entire colon.
  • Air or carbon dioxide is used to gently inflate the colon for better visibility — mild bloating is normal.
  • If polyps are found, they are removed immediately. Biopsies may be taken of any abnormal tissue.
  • The procedure typically takes 30 to 60 minutes.

After the Procedure

  • You will recover for 30–60 minutes in our recovery area.
  • Mild bloating or gas is common and resolves quickly.
  • Your doctor will review findings with you before discharge.
  • If biopsies were taken, results are typically available within 1–2 weeks.
  • A driver (age 18+) is required at check-in and for your ride home.
  • Most patients return to normal activities the following day.

Quick Facts

Duration30 – 60 minutes
SedationIV sedation (you will be asleep)
Driver RequiredYes — must be present at check-in
Time at FacilityApproximately 2–3 hours total

What is ERCP?

ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) is an advanced, specialized procedure that combines endoscopy and X-ray imaging to diagnose and treat conditions of the bile ducts, gallbladder, and pancreas. A flexible scope is passed through the mouth and guided to the small intestine, where dye is injected and X-ray images are taken of the ducts. ERCP is both a diagnostic and therapeutic tool — meaning problems found during the procedure are often treated in the same session.

Why It's Performed
Gallstones in the Bile Duct Jaundice (Yellow Skin / Eyes) Biliary Strictures (Narrowing) Pancreatitis Pancreatic Duct Obstruction Bile Duct Leak Cholangitis (Bile Duct Infection) Bile Duct Cancer Evaluation Stent Placement Sphincterotomy
What to Expect

During the Procedure

  • ERCP requires a deeper level of anesthesia than a standard endoscopy. You will receive either Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC) or general anesthesia. An anesthesiologist or certified anesthesia provider will be present throughout the procedure to monitor and manage your anesthesia.
  • You will lie on your stomach or left side on an X-ray table.
  • A specialized side-viewing endoscope (duodenoscope) is guided through your mouth to the area where the bile duct and pancreatic duct drain into the small intestine.
  • A small catheter is inserted through the scope and contrast dye is injected, making the ducts visible on X-ray.
  • Depending on findings, your doctor may remove stones, widen a narrowed duct (sphincterotomy), place a stent, or obtain tissue biopsies — all in the same session.
  • The procedure typically takes 30 to 90 minutes.

After the Procedure

  • You will be monitored in recovery for 2 to 4 hours after the procedure.
  • Mild sore throat, bloating, or nausea may occur and typically resolve within 24 hours.
  • Your doctor will discuss findings and any interventions performed before you go home.
  • A driver (age 18+) is required to take you home — no driving or major decisions for 24 hours after sedation.
  • Rest for the remainder of the day. Most patients resume normal activities within 1–2 days.

What is a Flexible Sigmoidoscopy?

A flexible sigmoidoscopy is a procedure that allows your gastroenterologist to examine the rectum and the lower portion of your colon (the sigmoid colon) using a short, flexible tube with a camera. It is similar to a colonoscopy but examines only the last two feet of the colon. It requires much simpler preparation — typically just one or two enemas — and can often be performed without sedation, making it a convenient option for evaluating lower GI symptoms.

Why It's Performed
Rectal Bleeding Rectal Pain or Pressure Change in Bowel Habits Hemorrhoid Evaluation Lower Colon Polyp Surveillance Diarrhea or Constipation Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Follow-up Anal Fissure Evaluation
What to Expect

During the Procedure

  • You will lie on your left side on the procedure table.
  • The flexible sigmoidoscope is gently guided through the rectum and into the lower colon.
  • Air or carbon dioxide is used to gently expand the colon for better visualization — mild cramping is normal.
  • Biopsies or polyp removal may be performed during the same visit if needed.
  • The procedure typically takes 10 to 20 minutes.

After the Procedure

  • Recovery is brief — most patients feel normal within 15–30 minutes.
  • Mild bloating or light spotting may occur and resolves quickly.
  • If sedation was used, a driver is required. If no sedation, you may drive yourself home.
  • Your doctor will review findings with you immediately after the procedure.
  • Biopsy results, if taken, are typically available within 1–2 weeks.

Quick Facts

Duration10 – 20 minutes
SedationOften not required; sedation available if preferred
Driver RequiredOnly if sedation is used
Time at FacilityApproximately 1–1.5 hours total
Return to WorkSame day in most cases
